3 National Monuments Made of Natural Stone

Natural stone is an incredibly durable material that has been used to create monuments for centuries. One of the main benefits of using natural stone is its long-lasting durability. Natural stone is extremely resistant to weathering, making it an ideal material for long-term outdoor monuments.

The Washington Monument - Marble & Granite

The Washington Monument is a beautiful structure made from natural stone, and it stands as a reminder of our nation’s strength and resilience.

The obelisk is constructed of white marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, all natural stones found in the region.

Marble was used for the first level of the monument, which is visible in the first fifteen feet of the monument. It was sourced from Maryland and Virginia and was cut into large blocks and then transported to the site. The blocks were then fitted together and polished to a high shine.

Granite was used for the second level, which is visible between the 15th and 150th foot of the monument. This stone was sourced from Massachusetts and was cut into smaller blocks than the marble. It was then fitted together and polished to a smooth finish.

Bluestone gneiss was used for the third level of the monument, which is visible between the 150th and 555th foot. This stone was sourced from Virginia and was cut into even smaller blocks than the granite. It was then fitted together and polished to a glossy finish.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial - Granite

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located in Washington DC and is made from granite from China.

The memorial consists of a 30 foot statue of Martin Luther King Jr. in the center of a four-acre site.

The statue is surrounded by a ring of water and two stone walls inscribed with quotes from his speeches. The granite for the memorial was selected for its strength, durability, and resemblance to the stone of the Lincoln Memorial.

The entire memorial was designed with the intention of honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and his leadership in the civil rights movement. The memorial is a reminder to visitors of the importance of fighting for justice and equality. Mount Rushmore - Granite

Mount Rushmore is a massive sculpture carved into the side of a granite cliff in South Dakota. It was constructed between 1927 and 1941 and depicts the faces of four US presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

It is regarded as an iconic symbol of the United States, and its granite faces draw millions of visitors each year. The entire sculpture is made of granite, a hard, durable rock which was chosen for its resistance to erosion and weathering.
